WW2 British RAF Issue Mk 2 Netted Steel Helmet
A stunning helmet with rare RAF roundel insignia painted to the front . A small number of similar marked helmets are known to exist ,some held in collections in Normandy ,France . The RAF in WW2 fielded many personal on or very near to the various front lines . These were combat arms such as the Armored car sections and the RAF Regiment but on top of this other RAF members worked in many capacities with and along side the front line activities For instance RAF ground to air signals were part the Chindit operation and suffered alongside the army . RAF servicing commandos and other combined operations members occupied the beachheads of Normandy and Italy . As members of the RAF however clad in Khaki battledress many would have sought to show their independence ! This helmet has a very nice small weave early pattern of net with interwoven strings for foliage attachment .To the helmets front is a typical version of the world famous proud RAF roundel insignia . The helmets paint is good with a super fine patina and much crazing to the oil heavy white circle of the frontal insignia . The liner shows a 1940 date and to the helmets brim underside is a paint stamped service number being from a block of numbers issued in December of 1941 . An untouched and interesting helmet .
